2 Play 1 Or Play 3

(Pocket-lint) - Sonos' wireless music organization is fantabulous but the company's portfolio has changed significantly since the Play:3 was first introduced in 2011.

When the Sonos Play:3 arrived, the cheapest component available in the Sonos organization was the old Play:five. Eight years on and the Play:3 is no longer bachelor through Sonos, though you can still pick it up elsewhere, and newer speakers have been introduced, not merely in the refreshed Play:5, only also in the smart Sonos One and portable Sonos Move.

With then much choice out there, not just from within the Sonos system itself, but from competitors too, is the Play:3 however worth considering if you can get your easily on i? Here's our review.

  • Which Sonos speaker is right for you?

Our quick take

The Sonos Play:3 is not widely bachelor these days (we tin can only find information technology 2d hand), and it has been replaced by more than appealing speakers within the Sonos portfolio, only it's still a great sounding speaker.

As with all Sonos speakers, the Play:3 offers easy setup, plenty of features from stereo pairing and Trueplay tuning, to vocalization command with a compatible Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant device.

Is the Play:3 worth buying if you lot can become concord of it? If you lot don't listen the slightly older design, then yes, because it still sounds nifty Sonos is always updating its speakers with software updates, constantly improving them years after they are released. Viii years on, we still use the Play:3 and we notwithstanding love it.

It is worth considering the other Sonos speakers available though - such as the Axle that also sounds slap-up but improves your TV audio too, or the Sonos Move which is around the same size equally the Sonos Play:iii just portable with Bluetooth connectivity.

This review was starting time published in July 2011 and has been updated to reflect the current market.

Sonos Move

The Sonos Motility is a piffling more expensive than the Sonos Play:three but it brings water resistance, a dandy sound quality, portability and Bluetooth sound. You tin't use 2 Sonos Movement every bit surrounds though so if y'all're considering the Play:iii to boost your Television sound, the Sonos Move isn't for you lot.

Sonos Axle

The Sonos Beam is a meaty soundbar but it doubles up as a speaker, functioning exactly like other Sonos speakers, only offering TV connection too. It'south a two-in-1 device really, whilst also offering AirPlay ii and born voice control.

Sonos 1 SL

squirrel_widget_167290

The Sonos 1 SL is the same as the Sonos One smart speaker but information technology ditches built in phonation control. It is smaller than the Play:3 so it doesn't evangelize quite the same audio performance, but it is cheaper as well and two Sonos One SL speakers tin can be combined as rear surrounds.

Sonos Play:3

4.5 stars - Pocket-lint recommended

For

  • Sounds dandy
  • Vertical or horizontal orientation
  • Numerous features through Sonos app
  • Voice control with uniform Alexa or Google Assistant device

Confronting

  • Old pattern
  • Sonos Axle or Sonos Motility more appealing in terms of features and blueprint
  • Not widely available anymore

Design

  • 132 x 268 x 160mm
  • Black or white
  • Horizontal or vertical orientation

The Sonos Play:3 sits in the middle of the Sonos portfolio in terms of size, around where the Sonos Move is. It is around the same size as a kid's shoebox, and around half the size of the Play:5, but larger than the Sonos Ane and Sonos 1 SL. Available in black or white colour options, like most of the Sonos portfolio, the Play:three tin can be positioned vertically or horizontally.

An accelerometer automatically knows the orientation of the speaker and adjusts the sound appropriately, like the Sonos Play:5 does. Sadly the logo isn't as cleverly designed on the Play:3 as information technology is on the 2015 Play:5 so information technology looks improve when horizontal.

Pocket-lint

sonos play image 2

The sides and top of the Play:iii taper downwardly towards the back, with the physical controls are positioned on meridian of the device. We say controls, but these controls consist of volume upwards and downwardly, and a mute push, and zero more, which is like to the Play:1 but the Play:one switches the mute push button for a Play/Pause button.

More than recent Sonos speakers opt for capacitive controls, allowing for a more than streamlined design, but all are controlled via the Sonos app, available for iOS, Android, Mac or PC - which we will talk well-nigh in more than particular in a minute.

Effectually the back of the Play:iii, you'll notice power and Ethernet sockets. The Sonos Play:3 requires abiding power, much like the rest of the Sonos portfolio, except the Sonos Motility, which is bombardment powered. When the Play:3 first launched, you needed a Sonos Bridge to connect it to your router wirelessly, only this is no longer the case. The Ethernet port might be required when you get-go set the Play:3 upward simply you will and then be able to move it wherever yous similar in your home.

Gear up-upwards is very piece of cake likewise. Plug the Play:3 in, create an account, and you're off - as long equally yous have a Wi-Fi connection. The Sonos app will guide yous through the setup process footstep-by-step and you'll be able to perform software features like Trueplay, which will let you lot to easily tune the Play:3 to its surroundings using the microphone on an iOS device.

The Sonos system is uniform with over 100 music services, from Apple Music and Spotify to lesser known options (yous'll demand accounts for each) and you'll also be able to connect a NAS drive, as well every bit play music from your smartphone, tablet or computer.

Control through the Sonos app

  • Group speakers
  • Search music services
  • Alter EQ settings

As mentioned, Sonos speakers are controlled through the Sonos app, which is available for iOS and Android smartphones, as well as PC and Macs. You lot can read our Sonos tips and tricks characteristic to detect out everything you can practise with the Sonos app, just at that place are multiple features bachelor, not just searching for the song you desire and sending it to your Play:3.

Inside the Sonos app, you'll be able to group the Play:3 with any other Sonos speakers you have, allowing you to play the same music in multiple rooms simultaneously. Yous tin can also choose to have different music in different rooms, if y'all take more than one Sonos speaker.

Pocket-lint

sonos play image 6

The app as well allows you lot to search across all your music streaming services in one place, and you can search via artist, vocal, anthology, playlist, station etc, making accessing what you desire to heed to super easy. It'due south also possible to arrange EQ levels, change room names for the Sonos speakers y'all have setup and you can access Trueplay from the app too, in case you chose not to tune your speaker at setup.

For those lucky enough to have Sonos home theatre products - such as the Sonos Axle or Sonos Playbar and a Sonos Sub - along with 2 Play:3 speakers for example, you tin can set the Play:three speakers up as surrounds in the Sonos app.

Voice control is available on the Sonos Play:3 too, but it isn't integrated similar it is on the Sonos One, Sonos Axle or Sonos Move. If y'all have any of these 3 speakers, yous can setup Amazon Alexa or Google Banana in the Sonos app and and then use them to control your Play:3, otherwise you'll demand a Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant uniform device, like the Amazon Echo Dot or Google Habitation Mini to control the Play:3 using your voice.

Operation

  • 1 tweeter
  • Two mid-range drivers
  • One bass radiator

The Sonos Play:3 features three integrated speakers - one tweeter, ii mid-range drivers, and 1 bass radiator. Each driver of the production is individually powered by a defended amplifier that boom out of the front of the unit of measurement. We play numerous different tracks and we've used the Play:3 to supply the music in our function (around 20 square metres) for years. It's also spent time in our kitchen - which is larger than our part - and it's handled both situations without a problem.

Tracks nosotros've played over the years have included everything from the Tron Legacy soundtrack to Dave Matthews Ring to Nirvana to Foo Fighters too as Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newton and a stack of other artists too. In a nutshell, we've been using this as our chief music provider. In all cases the music sounds great.

Pocket-lint

sonos play image 5

It's not as punchy as the Play:5, but it has been more than than enough to fill our rooms with music, and without getting anywhere virtually the high volume levels. You'll observe the Sonos Move almost comparable in terms of sound performance, though the Play:3 deals with the mid-range meliorate. The Play:3 is also better than the Sonos One and Play:1 speakers, though this isn't surprising given both these devices are smaller.

The Play:three happily copes with the high vocals in songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit for example while still coping with the depression bass, as many of the Sonos speakers manage.

Like all Sonos speakers, ii Play:3 speakers can exist paired together to get true stereo sound also. This isn't just a case of the music you play being louder, just the speakers have defended sides - left and right. Something like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon sounds really practiced when you take stereo audio set.

Pocket-lint

sonos play image 8

There'southward i take hold of though - to stereo pair Sonos speakers, they have to be the aforementioned speaker so y'all tin can't mix and match Play:3 and a Sonos One together to achieve the same result for example. Information technology has to be two Play:3s, or 2 Play:5s. The merely mixing and matching you tin do is between the Sonos One and the Sonos One SL.

To recap

Is the Play:3 worth buying if you can go concord of it? If you don't mind the slightly older pattern, then yes, because it even so sounds keen Sonos is always updating its speakers with software updates, constantly improving them years afterward they are released. It is worth considering the other Sonos speakers available though - such as the Axle that likewise sounds great merely improves your TV audio too, or the Sonos Motility which is effectually the same size as the Sonos Play:three simply portable with Bluetooth connectivity.
